Downtown Music Services has inked a new deal with Jamaica-headquartered music company Geejam Music, including Geejam Studios in Port Antonio, Jamaica, to provide music publishing administration and label services to its existing catalogue and roster of songwriters/producers.
Jon Baker, the former President of Island Jamaica, opened Geejam Studios in 1998 after his own Gee Street Records saw success with PM Dawn, The RZA, The Jungle Brothers, Queen Latifaand The Stereo MCs. The studio has since hosted Drake, Harry Styles, Megan Thee Stallion, Sam Smith and The Rolling Stones, among others.
“I first met Jon when I worked at MCA Music in the 1980s. His label Gee Street released all of my favourite records and we had just picked up one of them, PM Dawn for publishing,” said Mike Smith, Global President of Downtown Music Services. “His musical knowledge is second to none and I am thrilled that we are able to work together again. “
In addition to the company’s existing roster, the agreement also includes Geejam Music’s newest signings of production duo Shakoo & John Coop and dancehall artist Skeng.
“Our partnership will provide an international platform for the release of homegrown Jamaican music via the Geejam Music label and see the reactivation of Gee Street Recordings for our international artistes with an A&R presence in the U.K. and U.S.,” added Baker.
“We’re super thrilled to be partnering with Geejam, a pivotal game changer, collaborator and hub for bringing talent together from around the world,” shared Davina Merchant, A&R Manager, Downtown Music Services.
