SONY/ATV'S WORLDWIDE STRATEGY CONFERENCE: WE LOVE STREAMING
11/1/17

Streaming is the primary topic of this week’s worldwide strategy conference at Sony/ATV HQ in NYC, where the pubco’s execs from around the globe have gathered to discuss their successes on the platform and strategize about its further growth. There’s reason to pass out the cigars: Over the past year, the pubbery’s streaming revenue has been triple the income from terrestrial radio. The latter has often been the leading revenue stream for publishing in recent times.

Indeed, several of the biggest streaming stories from the last year or so reside in the house of SATV boss Marty Bandier, seen in the photo above just before instructing his international team on the proper way to light a Cohiba. (Click the pic for a larger view.)

Take “Despacito,” for example—the most-streamed track globally of all time; it was co-penned by SATV writers Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Erika Ender.

They’ve also got Drake, the most streamed artist of all time.

Then there’s Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” which—at 1.4 billion streams—is Spotify’s most-streamed song ever.

And Taylor Swift’s “Look What You Made Me Do,” which holds the record for most streams in its first 24 hours on Spotify and YouTube.

“For the music business, the main goal for hits was always radio airplay, but things have changed and that’s no longer the case,” Bandier said. Streaming is now the biggest driver for both hits and revenue, which is great news for us given that we represent so many incredible songwriters and artists. Now we just have to strategize about how to keep those idiots from HITS away."
