Sometimes a song that’s been out for a few years can resurface powerfully thanks to a sync or other driver. In the case of “Runaway” by Glassnote’s Norwegian phenom, Aurora, the drivers were TikTok and Billie Eilish.
The latter noted that the song’s video motivated her (at age 12) to pursue music. As for TikTok, well, it’s done its mysterious TikTok thing (#RUNAWAYAURORA has blown past 740m views) and helped catapult the track into the front ranks of the DSPs. The song recently racked up 7m streams, becoming the #1-streamed Alternative cut at Apple Music and flying at Shazam. It’s currently in the Top 20 on Spotify’s Global chart; only last week it was added to the biggest playlists at Spotify and Apple. The socials have responded big-time, and now a radio story beckons.
It’s a fascinating trajectory for this 2015 offering, crafted by an enigmatic young singer/songwriter (born Aurora Aksnes) who grew up wandering along the fjords. She says she was just 11 when she first composed “Runaway.” When we consider what we were doing at that age, we are humbled. Also mortified, but that’s another story.
How far will “Runaway” get? What will Aurora beam to us next? Stay tuned.
