OLIVIA’S LANE

Let’s talk about Olivia Rodrigo.

Geffen’s breakout seemingly came out of nowhere with “drivers license,” which zoomed up the streaming charts, prompting biz watchers to fire up their Google machines. That frantic research revealed that the then-17-year-old was a co-star of High School Musical and enjoyed a rabid social following. Like Britney, Christina, Justin and others before her, this was a Disney diva kid poised on the brink of major stardom.

On Spotify alone, “drivers license” has racked up about 660m streams and become the biggest-streaming record of 2021 so far. It’s already amassed 2.7m+ in activity. The cut also sat at #1 at Pop radio for five consecutive weeks. Even so, it was tempting to view this phenomenon as a unicorn and guess that Olivia (who turned 18 in February) might be a one-and-done pop eruption.

Not so fast: Follow-up “déjà vu” is also a smash, instantly slaying at the DSPs (it debuted in the Top 5 on our Streaming Songs chart) and radio (it was #1 Most Added at Pop, with 121 adds out of the box)—and solidifying Olivia’s claim as a real, resilient factor on the pop landscape. Her full-length, SOUR, is due on 5/21; could her music career go supernova at that point?

Meanwhile, that second hit has ramped up still further the value of Rodrigo’s publishing (she co-wrote both singles with producer Daniel Nigro). Stay tuned for news on that score.
