SONY LEGACY, WBR SET RECORD STORE DAY RELEASES
3/8/16

by Phil Gallo

Vinyl heads, crate-diggers and people who just like to be surrounded by mayhem in retail settings will be attempting on 4/16 to grab singles from Miles Davis and Joe Strummer, limited edition LPs from The Deftones, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Linkin Park, a live Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers set and picture discs from the likes of David Bowie and Muse.

Our friends at Sony Legacy and Warner Bros. Records released their lists of Record Store Day singles and albums today, packed with reissues, a few vinyl debuts and a compilation from one of America’s finest craft brew producers, Dogfish Head.

Music To Drink Beer To, Vol. 2 includes tracks from Lou Reed, Patti Smith Group, Lee Dorsey, Mongo Santamaria, Dennis Wilson and Bessie Smith’s rendition of one of our favorite drinking songs, "Gimme A Pigfoot and a Bottle of Beer."

Among Legacy’s vinyl offerings are Big Star’s Complete Columbia: Live at Missouri University 4/25/93, an Elvis Presley compilation I'm Leavin': Elvis Folk - Country, Johnny Cash’s The Best of the Johnny Cash Show, Matthew Sweet’s Goodfriend (Another Take on "Girlfriend") and Mew’s And The Glass Handed Kites.

The Miles 12-inch single is "Ghetto Walkin'," Robert Glasper’s twist on “The Gehtto Walk” he did with vocalist Bilal. The Strummer RSD exclusive is a 12-inch single featuring "Gangsterville," "Punk Rock Blues," "Sleepwalk" and "Cholo Vest." In addition, OutKast’s first single, "Elevators (Me & You), will make its first-ever commercial appearance on vinyl as a glow-in-the-dark alien green 10-inch.

Flaming Lips, longtime supporters of Record Store Day, are once again on Warner Bros. Records’ slate of releases with the limited edition eight-LP set Heady Nuggs Volume II: The Second 5 Warner Bros. Records 2006-2012 and a CD/comic book combo Lightning Strikes The Postman featuring an alternate mix of Clouds Taste Metallic and an original comic written and illustrated by Wayne Coyne.

WBR will also release an Andra Day EP of six live performances; a Big Data/RAC split single; a Deftones compilation B-Sides & Rarities, a Disturbed picture disc, an Echosmith/Talking Heads split with two versions of "This Must Be The Place (Naïve Melody)" and singles from Foals, Lukas Graham, Mudcrutch and others.

Among WBR’s LPs are Petty’s Kiss My Amps Live Vol.2 recorded during their 2013 tour, Clint Mansell's score to Darren Aronofsky's 2000 film Requiem for a Dream, performed by Kronos Quartet and Emmylou Harris' Wrecking Ball. The first 5,000 units of Hendrix’ Smash Hits will be exclusively numbered for Record Store Day.

Parlophone has three releases to celebrate Bowie: A 40th anniversary edition of "TVC15" with "Wild Is The Wind" on the flip side; a limited edition vinyl picture disc of The Man Who Sold The World featuring the alternative original German LP artwork; and Changesonebowie, which is being released and black and clear heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats.
