John Legend and his production company, Get Lifted Film Co., are documenting the true story of Black teenager Gary Duncan from New Orleans and his stance against the racist legal system in the film, A Crime on the Bayou.
Alongside Legend, the film is executive produced by Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius and Austyn Biggers of Get Lifted Film Co., as well as Regina K. Scully, Geralyn Dreyfous, Harlene Freezer, Jules Horowitz, Felicia Horowitz, Brenda Robinson, Amy Tiemann, Mark Trustin and Jamie Wolf.
Written and directed by Nancy Buirski, the doc first premiered at the 2020 DOC NYC Film Festival and is the third film in director’s trilogy to profile individuals who fought for justice in and around the Civil Rights era.
The film will also feature a new original song, “My Path,” written and performed by Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/producer Raphael Saadiq.
Saadiq was previously nominated for the Best Original Song Academy Award and Golden Globe in 2017 for Mary J. Blige’s “Mighty River” from Mudbound and recently received a Golden Globe nomination for Andra Day’s “Tigress & Tweed” this year from The United States vs. Billie Holiday. He’s also composed music for HBO’s Insecure.
“Our film is about institutional racism. It is also about allyship, the coming together of Black and white activists who worked throughout history to demolish it. It is a complicated notion, one receiving new scrutiny in the current climate,” said Buirski.
The documentary, which was acquired by Shout! Studios, is a production of Augusta Films in association with Get Lifted Film Co. and Artemis Rising Foundation, and will open in select theatres nationwide on 6/18.
