EMOTIONAL TO A HELLISH EXTENT
6/14/19

BY NICOLE GHAPGHARAN

On Wednesday 6/12, a sold-out crowd at L.A.’s Fonda Theatre welcomed Vertigo Berlin/Capitol's Lewis Capaldi to the last night of his U.S. leg. It’s been one month since the release of Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent—the first album this year to spend four weeks at #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart.

The 22-year-old, whose world tour is almost completely sold-out, has a stage presence and confidence that's unmatched when compared to any other performance I’ve seen this year; that energy is bound to impress future audiences. While Capaldi has made a name for himself with gut-wrenching emotional tracks, accompanied by gravely powerhouse vocals, his charisma and self-depreciating humor serve as a breath of fresh air after he’s tugged on those rusty heartstrings.

In prankster fashion, Capaldi ended the night calling out Niall Horan to join him on stage, only to follow with, “So does anyone know where he is?” With a beer in hand, he closed out the nine-song set with hit single “Someone You Loved,” reminding us that, although his music is packed with tear-jerking material, he has a real shot at stand-up comedy.
