WHAT IT IS: Hawthorne displays a voice and manner more mature than her years. Before becoming a finalist on NBC’s The Voice, she was “a normal teenager” from a small town, singing with a worship group at church, nursing homes and benefits. While on the show, she impressed the coaches with her talent, work ethic and authenticity. Adam Levine pointed out that never before in the history of the show had he seen “such a drastic, incredible, unbelievable journey.” Pharrell Williams compared her drive to that of Beyoncé. Coached first by Christina Aguilera and then Williams, the 20-year-old inspirational/soul/R&B phenom rose to the final four in season eight of the hit series.
