PICKLES FROM A STAR
6/3/15

Since I began working in the music biz, I've learned how to hold myself back from going ape shit while my idols rock the stage just a few feet away from me. As a big fan of Mom+Pop’s Tasmanian devil, Courtney Barnett, I could not contain my excitement as she enchanted the sold-out Roxy on Saturday night, compelling me to sing at the top of my lungs the entire time.

The post-punk songstress transported me to another era with her Nirvana-esque grungy riffs and throwback to Louis Armstrong’s classic tune “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off.” Check out my favorite Barnett song, “Pickles From A Jar" (below), which was featured in Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2014, for a taste of what I’m talking about.

Contrary to my expectations of a club filled with lesbians (Hell, Courtney even made me reconsider my sexuality), the room was predominantly filled with middle-aged men and their teenage kids all equally excited to hear Courtney churn out songs from her debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and sometimes I Just Sit.

Rife with biting lyrics and effortless attitude, her record has become a staple of my musical diet and is already my favorite album of 2015. This chick can really hold her own with the likes of Chrissie Hynds and Joan Jett; if only they were still writing classics...
