Last week, I got dumped, and I mean, I got dumped like Wile E. Coyote does when he’s just raced 10 feet past the edge of the cliff. Venomous words were flying and the whiplash was disorienting, especially without a Xanax bar in close proximity, but as William Elliott Whitmore always told me, “You gotta take it on the chin.” Granted, Whitmore also taught me to “smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, drink your glasses to the bottom.” So, I’m sure you have an idea of how I was spending my week. But as in a typical L.A. love story, my “ex” came right on back. Suddenly the vinegar turned to honey, and my restless heart complied, but that doesn’t mean I was any less befuddled.

If you’re like me, when your heart gets run over by a 4x4, you search for the perfect anthem that dramatizes the tire tracks on your trampled thoracic cavity, but also makes you feel like Xena the fucking Warrior Princess.

Gotta say, I think I found my fix. Elle King’s “Ex’s & Oh’s” is a knock-out. Try to imagine an early Wanda Jackson mixed with Duffy in her “Mercy” days, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of this spitfire’s sound. TheRCA newcomer provides the perfect pick-me-up with this sassy earworm, powered by her smoked & whiskey-soaked vocals. I can’t decide if it makes me want to dance about or smash things, but I’m okay with either.

The track was Most Added at Triple A with 30+ stations on at impact, and the debut album is expected in early 2015. I suggest you make way for this force of nature and look to her whenever you find yourself chasingMaker’s Mark with Ben & Jerry’s. Cheers.

xx,
