What's Up at Pop Radio

Aaaaand we’re back. And no, I do NOT want to talk about the first-ever NCAA playoff games. I’ll gladly debate whether or not that was a catch, and what the NFL rules are—but no NCAA talk, please. I can’t wait for pitchers and catchers to report…

But I would like to acknowledge some other scorers, namely Republic’s CW, Spangler and Russell, on having the top three spots on the chart with Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space” (Big Machine) Nick Jonas’ “Jealous” (Island) and Ariana Grande & The Weeknd’s “Love Me Harder.” Impressive. Look for a big launch this week with Tove Lo’s “Talking Body” (Island) and for continued growth on both James Newton Howard f/Jennifer Lawrence’s “The Hanging Tree” and Milky Chance’s “Stolen Dance”…

Things are heating up quickly in 2015 for RCA’s Riccitelli, JR, Strazza, Daddio and Cooper with Mark Ronson f/Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” sitting at #5, Prince Royce f/Snoop Dogg’s “Stuck On A Feeling” and Pitbull f/Ne-Yo’s “Time of Our Lives” both moving Top 20, and Usher f/Juicy J’s “I Don’t Mind” and Becky G’s “Can’t Stop Dancin” both on the chart and climbing. Says WMKSKeith Allen: “Prince Royce f/Snoop Dogg’s "Stuck on a Feeling" is the perfect song for Rhythm-leaning Top 40 stations.” This week, they launch Kelly Clarkson’s “Heartbeat Song.” Meanwhile, the video for Sia’s “Elastic Heart” has earned more than 34m views, while the track snags big iTunes numbers after just a few days. An appearance on SNL this weekend should be all they need to be off to the races…

Warner Bros.Gray, Dyer, Pivar and Reich pick up big numbers this week with the Cumulus add on I Love Makonnen f/Drake’s “Tuesday,” while Priory’s “Weekend” is looking to chart after some good callout scores and solid airplay at KDWB, SiriusXM Hits 1, WRVW and WXXL. Look for Echosmith’s new track, “Bright,” landing on your desk this week; we’re told radio is already in love with this one…

Epic’s Glassman has Meghan Trainor’s “Lips Are Movin” poised to go Top 10, while Fifth Harmony’s “Sledgehammer” makes the jump into the Top 20… Hollywood’s Finck and Smith have another Top 10 hit with Selena Gomez’s “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” which continues to climb, moving to #8 this week—with big increases coming from KBKS, KDND and WBMP

Capitol’s Reese, Rainey, Youngblood and Siciliano have one of this week’s Greatest Gainers in Sam Smith’s “I’m Not the Only One,” which is currently sitting at #4, while he continues to amaze people at his live shows across the country. 5 Seconds of Summer’s “What I Like About You” is looking to make the Top 30 move with new growth from KKHH, KRUF, WNTQ and WIOQ. Ne-Yo f/Juicy J’s “She Knows” (Motown) charted this week with new play from KEGY, SiriusXM Hits 1, KMXV and KAMP

Columbia’s Leipsner, Borris and Vaughn continue their hot streak as Hozier’s “Take Me to Church” climbs to #6 with strong numbers. Outside of airplay, he’s seeing great sales and stream numbers and is currently #1 worldwide in tags on Shazam. After being performed on seemingly every TV show on the planet, Ella Henderson’s “Ghost” (SYCO) is ready to move Top 15 and is currently approaching 40m views on the video. One Direction’s “Night Changes” (SYCO) continues to climb the chart. Calvin Harris f/Ellie Goulding’s new track, “Outside,” had a very impressive first week with Z100, WKTU, WKSE and KAMP all coming in; look for this one to climb quickly…

Def Jam’s Sackheim, Chester, Rothschild and Farag have Alesso f/Tove Lo’s “Heroes” climbing and adding stations, while Big Sean f/E-40’s “I Dont F**k With You” has picked up over 100 stations (and counting). Meanwhile, the team has created a huge media buzz with Kanye West’s latest, “Only One” f/Paul McCartney (you know, the unknown Paul); look for big action there. MUSIC WE LOVE: Zara Larsson’s “Uncover” and Olly Murs f/Travie McCoy’s “Wrapped Up.”
