Emilia Perez, Netflix’s Spanish-language musical about a drug kingpin who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, leads the pack with 13 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, along with nods for Actress, Supporting Actress and two entrants in the Best Original Song category.
The Academy recognized director Jacques Audiard and gave nods to Karla Sofia Gascon for Best Actress and Zoe Saldana for Best Supporting Actress. “El Mal” and “Mi Camino" were acknowledged in the Best Original Song category.
Wicked and the critically acclaimed historical drama The Brutalist each notched 10 nominations, including Best Picture. Wicked’s stars also got their flowers, with Cynthia Erivo in contention for Best Actress and Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress.
The musical trend continued with love for the fascinating-yet-divisive Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, which earned a Best Picture nod as well as an expected Best Actor nomination for Timothée Chalamet as the rock legend.
