Leading European DSP Deezer has raised its monthly subscription fee as of 9/21. In EU countries, the cost of an individual subscription has risen from €10.99 to €11.99 per month. Family plans have also jumped by two euros to €19.99.
The increase doesn’t extend to U.K. users, who are already paying £11.99, or those in the U.S., who are shelling out $10.99.
Rights holders have been asserting for some time that music is undervalued in the streaming space and that increases in these fees (like the regular, substantial spikes by the Netflixes and Hulus of the world) are long overdue. But you probably knew that, especially if you were one of the people making this argument. After much prompting, DSP leader Spotify confirmed an increase in its sub fee over the summer.
Naturally, even a small per-user increase adds up to a windfall for the biz.
And what were you going to do with that extra euro anyway? Buy one buttered snail?
Stay tuned for updates.
