Returning to the MTV VMA stage for the first time in 17 years, Sony Latin's Shakira will perform at the 9/12 event and be honored with the Video Vanguard Award. She's also received four VMA nominations, including Artist of the Year.
The former Super Bowl halftime-show headliner's year has included two global #1s, a collaboration with Karol G on "TQG" and a pairing with Bizarrap for "Shakira: Bzrp Music Sessions, Vol. 53," and she's released multiple new songs, among them "Acróstico" (5/11) and "Copa Vacia" f/Manuel Turizo (6/29), that fans expect to be on her forthcoming studio album.
“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and influence the masses with her unique musical prowess,” said Paramount President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events Bruce Gillmer, the VMA-broadcast capo di tutti i capi. “She’s a trailblazer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music. Waka waka.”
In addition to previously announced performers Demi Lovato, KAROL G, Måneskin and Stray Kids, the VMAs have added Doja Cat, Lil Wayne, Anitta, Kelsea Ballerini and TOMORROW X TOGETHER to the show's lineup.
Doja, who hosted and performed in 2021, is up for five awards this year. Nominee Lil Wayne will perform his new single, “Kat Food,” marking his first performance at the event in more than a decade. Nominee Anitta returns to the stage after becoming the first Brazilian artist to take home an MTV Moon Person last year, and Ballerini will make her VMAs debut.
The MTV Video Music Awards will air on 9/12 at 9pm ET on Paramount and MTV's various channels and platforms.
