Fall Out Boy ignited something this week when it released its new single, "We Didn't Start the Fire," an updated version of Billy Joel's 1989 hit of the same name. The Crush Music-repped group describes it as "covering newsworthy items from 1989-2023."
Among those are Tiger Woods, Stranger Things, the feud between Kanye West and Taylor Swift, Obama, 9/11, MySpace, Harry Potter, Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson.
Singer Patrick Stump and bassist-lyricist Pete Wentz elaborated in a joint Instagram post: "All these important people and events—some that disappeared into the sands of time, others that changed the world forever. So much has happened in the span of the last 34 years, we felt a little system update might be fun. Hope you like our take on it."
Love it or like it just a little bit, "We Didn't Start the Fire" amassed 250m press impressions within the first 12 hours of its release and has been added to several major streaming playlists, resulting in millions of streams.
Billy Joel has yet to weigh in. Meanwhile, we're wondering who did start that fire in 1989.
