Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Diane Warren and David Byrne have received Oscar nominations for Best Original Song. They will compete with Golden Globe winners M.M. Keeravani and Chandrabose.
Warren, who has famously never won, received her 14th Oscar nomination for “Applause,” from Tell It Like a Woman, which Sofia Carson sings in the film.
Lady Gaga, who won an original song Oscar for A Star Is Born’s “Shallow,” and Bloodpop are nominated for “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick. The track is also up for the Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
Rihanna, Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson, Tems and Ryan Coogler secured the nom for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ballad “Lift Me Up.” Byrne, Son Lux and Mitski penned “This Is a Life” for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Erstwhile Talking Head Byrne won the original score Oscar in 1988 for The Last Emperor.
Keeravani and Chandrabose’s “Naatu Naatu” can be heard in RRR—"Rise, Roar, Revolt"—in a scene filmed in 2021 in front of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky's official residence.
In the score category, composer John Williams’ nomination for The Fabelmans is his 53rd, just six behind Walt Disney’s record 59. He is up against Volker Bertelmann (All Quiet on the Western Front), Justin Hurwitz (Babylon), Carter Burwell (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Son Lux (Everything Everywhere All at Once).
For Hurwitz, who won two Oscars for La La Land, it’s his fourth nom. It’s Burwell’s third and Bertelmann’s second. The nod for the band Son Lux is its first.
Daniel Scheinert and Daniel Kwan’s Everything Everywhere All at Once led the way with 11 nominations. Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin and Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front secured nine each.
