SWAYING "FLOWERS"

By way of demonstrating that Miley Cyrus' "Flowers" is now making the jump from ridiculously huge pop song to cultural phenomenon, we present this video of screen icon Diane Keaton dancing to the Columbia smash.

Are the TikTok kids dancing to it? Of course. Is there a "Flowers" dance challenge? You bet there is. But a fascinating facet of all this floral festivity is how the song's message of resilience and self-acceptance appears to be resonating with older listeners.

“YOUR INCREDIBLE SONG GAVE ME A REASON TO DANCE IN MY OWN BACKYARD!” Keaton declared. We have anecdotal testimony that a lot of upper-demo folks (particularly newly single ones) are feeling this way about Miley's song. Coverage of Keaton's dance in publications like Us, meanwhile, is introducing scores of her contemporaries, who typically are not glued to Spotify and TikTok, to a pop tune they can relate to. Indeed, 79-year-old diva Gloria Gaynor, whose 1978 disco triumph "I Will Survive" galvanized audiences with a kindred sentiment, praised "Flowers" in a report by USA Today: "Your new song carries the torch of empowerment and encourages everyone to find strength in themselves to persevere and thrive," Gaynor wrote. "Well done, Miley!"

We've been telling you how huge "Flowers" has become on DSPs and radio. Is it on its way to becoming a multi-generational anthem? Stay tuned...
