At the Washington, D.C., stop of her headlining tour Wednesday, 5/4, Olivia Rodrigo paused between songs to denounce the Supreme Court’s plan to overturn Roe v. Wade.
“Our bodies should never be in the hands of politicians,” the Geffen/Interscope star said to a sold-out room, referring to the draft of a majority opinion that leaked via Politico earlier this week. The crowd erupted in cheers. “I hope we can use our voices to protect the right to have a safe abortion, which is a right that so many people before us have worked so hard to get.”
While the court has confirmed the authenticity of the document Rodrigo referenced, it has also emphasized that it is not the final opinion. According to Politico, the ruling should be announced around the end of June.
According to Planned Parenthood data, nearly one in four women in America will have an abortion by age 45. If Roe v. Wade is overturned and states are allowed to ban abortion, people won’t stop getting them; instead, many will die from illegal, unsafe procedures. The more celebrities who use their platforms to get people protesting, signing petitions and donating, the better. Click here for a list of ways to get involved.
