JANUARY JUMPS: SOME NOTES ON DSP ACTIVITY

While a handful of 2021’s biggies (including Adele, Olivia and Doja) retain high spots on DSP charts, we note the ascendancy of several new arrivals as 2022’s streaming landscape takes shape.

As we noted in our most recent Flipover roundup (see related stories below), the Disney+ debut of the animated fantasy Encanto—featuring songs by Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda—has sent the track “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” to the #1 spot on Spotify’s U.S. Top 50 chart and into the Top 10 at Apple Music, where the Disney ST is also the #1 album. Another Encanto track, “Surface Pressure,” is Top 10 at Spot U.S., while yet more selections from the album are bubbling up.

Meanwhile, Muni Long, the artist moniker of hit songwriter Priscilla Renea, seems to have a monster on her hands with “Hrs and Hrs,” which is out on her own indie imprint, SuperGiant. The tune has rocketed to #2 at Apple Music. Muni's eight-song EP, Public Displays of Affection, dropped in November.

Another soundtrack song that's benefited from holiday viewing? “Enemy” by KIDinaKORNER/Interscope’s Imagine Dragons with rapper JID, from the Netflix animated series Arcane: League of Legends. The track has entered the Top 10 on the Spotify U.S. roundup and is Top 5 on the streamery’s global chart.

And attention must be paid to “Broadway Girls,” which pairs rapper Lil Durk with Nashville phenom Morgan Wallen. The Alamo cut is #3 at Apple Music overall and trending Top 10 at Spotify U.S.

We’ll have further updates on new streaming breakouts soon. For now, we need to drink enough coffee to offset two weeks of nonstop booze.
