ACADEMY STATEMENT ON MLK DAY: "INSPIRE CHANGE"

Academy family,

On Monday, as we reflect on and honor Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., let's remember his unwavering commitment to using his voice to speak truth to power and urgency to fight for what’s right.

We have a unique platform and responsibility here at the Recording Academy to combat inequality and injustice. As we continue to navigate these unsettling and uncomfortable times, let’s continue to work together to position the Academy as a catalyst to inspire change within our industry and beyond.

With that in mind, the Recording Academy is proud to work with partners across the country for a National Day of Service. Please join in honoring the life and legacy of Dr. King by signing up to volunteer.

Service events focus on COVID-19 relief and address issues worsened by the pandemic including hunger, racial justice, homelessness, mental health, educational disparities and economic opportunity. Events include local food drives, signing up to be a blood donor, writing appreciation cards to frontline workers and veterans, training on assisting a blind or low-vision person virtually, information sessions for how to become a crisis counselor for LGBTQ youth, and many, many more.

Thank you in advance for your dedication and service on behalf of our Academy and the music community.

With respect and appreciation,

Harvey Mason Jr.

Chair & Interim President/CEO
