RIGHTS ORGS JOIN NEWSOM, LEGISLATORS TO AID INDUSTRY PROFESSIONALS

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed AB2257 into law on 9/4 sparking celebration among the state's music community and leading music rights organizations. The legislation allows most music professionals to follow the less-strict Borello test to determine their employment classification. This specifically corrects AB5's rigid hurdle requiring independent contractors' work be out of the ordinary course of business while also providing for unions to continue to organize the work of industry professionals in CA.

The Recording Academy, RIAA, A2IM, Music Artist Coalition and other organizations released the following joint statement:

“This legislation ensures musicians and other creative workers can continue to live, create, and thrive in California. California’s leaders promised efforts to protect workers with a bill that would not undermine or destabilize the state’s vital music economy. Today, they have kept that promise. AB2257 restores California’s leadership as a home to the creative arts and creates clear, fair rules of the road for freelance, union, and independent artists in the state.”
