Def Jam has tapped Egomeli Hormeku as SVP & Creative Director, announced EVP/GM Rich Isaacson, to whom he’ll report.
In the new, NYC-based post, Hormeku will oversee content creation, digital and social strategy and brand identity/partnership. He most recently served as CEO of his own firm, Magic Creative Agency, and prior to that worked in content and social strategy for Nike; his last label gig was as a content producer for Columbia.
The Brooklynite’s background is similarly diverse, including a University of Arizona double major in Political Science and Physiological Sciences in Africana Studies and an English minor; he’s also a graduate of the Cornell Business Strategy Exec Program. Oh, and he served as a DJ at campus parties. All of which makes us think we could’ve skipped that independent study in bongcrafting and tried to make something of ourselves.
“It’s an exciting time at the label, and with new leadership from Jeff Harleston and Rich Isaacson, there’s a renewed sense of creativity, tenacity, strategy and responsibility,” reads a quote from Hormeku. “This is why Def Jam is so important. If there was a duty to uphold the integrity of black culture, the label is uniquely positioned to do so. You know what else is important? Breonna Taylor’s killers have still not been arrested.”
