BLACK HISTORY MONTH: ROCK & ROLL

Death, "Keep on Knocking"

This sibling trio of proto-punk trailblazers from Detroit recorded "Knocking" in the mid-'70s, and it's clear they were way ahead of the curve. Though the brothers Hackney didn't get their due back then, they were discovered decades later, partly thanks to some Drag City reissues and the 2012 documentary flick A Band Called Death. The joyous rendition featured here was captured at L.A.'s beloved Amoeba record emporium in 2013. Death's story appears in our new Black History Month special.
