YE JOLLY OLDE iTUNES U.K. CHARTS

With Turnover Tuesday a receding memory, it’s time to coin a new term—how about Fresh Friday? The Brits get started five hours before New York and eight hours before L.A., offering an opportunity for an early snapshot of U.K. trends for the coming week. (We’re still trying to get our heads around this rigmarole.)

Eight hours ago, compilation albums shockingly occupied the first eight slots; by noon London time, a pair of alternative acts—veteran indie rockers The Maccabees and folk/soul artist Lianne La Havas, had infiltrated the big board, with Years and Years the only holdover not named Various Artists.

The big change on the singles chart since midnight in the U.K. has been the arrival of the new one from 1D, which took a while to register because no one was expecting it (see above item). The tracks below this brand new chart-topper could well be singing “Drag Me Down,” because 1D has in effect pushed everything in last night’s Top 10 downward by one slot. The track’s arrival, btw, gives Jason Iley’s Sony the top four singles. And keep your eyes on The Weeknd’s stateside smash “Can’t Feel My Face,” which is on the brink of exploding over there as well.
