The Top 5 Highest Grossing Films in the U.S. Over Memorial Day Weekend

The future is now, as Buena Vista's Tomorrowland debuts as the #1 highest grossing film in America this weekend. The news is bittersweet, however, as the film was expected to rake in north of $40m. Landing just ahead of Pitch Perfect 2 in its second week, it's only the 22nd biggest Memorial Weekend opener of all time. The first belonged to Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which scored a whopping $140m.

Meanwhile, Fox's remake of 1982's horror classic, Poltergeist, enjoyed a first weekend at #4 despite unfortunate reviews.

1. Tomorrowland (Buena Vista) $33m 3,972/$8,301 avg. (debut)
2. Pitch Perfect 2 (Universal) $31m 3,560/$8,660 avg. (week 2)
3. Mad Max: Fury Road (Warner Bros.) $25m 3,722/$6,667 avg. (week 2)
4. Poltergeist (Fox) $23m 3,240/$6,975 avg. (debut)
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron (Buena Vista) $22m 3,727/$5,820 avg. (week 4)

It's also worth noting that Bleecker Street's I'll See You in My Dreams, starring Blythe Danner, saw a 459% bump in its second week, earning an average $97k across just three theaters.
