SHAKES TOP THE CHART WHILE PUSHING THE ENVELOPE

ATO’s Alabama Shakes scored a #1 debut with their sophomore album Sound & Color despite—or perhaps because of—their refusal to play it safe. The Blake Mills-produced LP is relentlessly intense, highly musical and wildly varied, exemplified by the segue in which the Curtis-inspired silky soul of “Guess Who” gives way to the scalding punk rock of “The Greatest.”

Encouragingly, Sound & Color remains in the iTunes Top 10 in its second week, weathering the onslaught of new releases, with a 4.5-star average rating based on 476 customer reviews.

An eerie sci-fi video of the narcotically funky title cut has just made its premiere on Vevo; take a look.
