Lollapolooza Under Scrutiny

LOLLAPALOOZA UNDER MICROSCOPE: Lollapalooza and its Austin-based sponsors C3 Presents are reportedly under investigation by the office of Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan for anti-trust issues stemming from the radius clauses that are imposed on the artists who play the giant, three-day concert in Chicago’s Grant Park, according to a report by Jim DeRogatis. The controversial clause, which is also employed by Coachella, prohibits acts from playing anywhere else in the Chicago area for months before and after their appearance at Lollapalooza, encompassing a 300-mile radius. Local promoters have claimed the restriction is decimating their business. This year’s festival takes place August 6-8. William Morris Endeavor’s Marc Geiger, a co-founder of the festival with Perry Farrell in the early ‘90s, has admitted receiving a subpoena to testify. WME owns 50% of Lolla with C3. (6/28a)
