EMI auction for Japan tally

RECOVERING JAPAN: EMI has raised $940k for the Japanese Red Cross through the auction of memorabilia by artists signed to the company. Worldwide bidding brought in a total of $470k, which was then doubled by EMI. More than 200 artists donated items to the auction; a 1987 Ferrari owned by Daft Punk and used in their movie Electroma raised $42k, a Steinway grand piano used by Bono and Eric Clapton sold for $15k, an original Birkin handbag donated by Jane Birkin brought in brought $163k, a costume head used by Deadmau5 went for $19k, and handwritten lyrics Brian Wilson to “God Only Knows” and a platinum Pet Sounds album album plaque sold for $7,643. Said Roger Faxon: “What a wonderful result! It was made possible by the extraordinary generosity of so many members of the EMI family, artists, songwriters, friends and staff alike. It has been a privilege for all of us at EMI to have participated in this effort to raise money to help the people of Japan who have suffered so much.” (4/27a)
