BMI'S URBAN DEVELOPMENTS: Snoop Dogg was honored as a BMI Icon during the org’s Urban Awards at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood last Friday night. With seven songs among the most-performed, Drake accepted his first BMI Urban Songwriter of the Year crown, while the 22-year-old B.o.B became the youngest songwriter ever to win BMI Urban Song of the Year for “Nothin’ on You,” featuring Bruno Mars. Meanwhile, 20-year-old Lexus “Lex Luger” Lewis is the youngest ever to be named BMI Urban Producer of the Year. In addition to Luger, BMI honored top producers Polow Da Don, Daniel “Kane Beatz” Johnson, R. Kelly and Kanye West. Universal Music Publishing Group scored 13 songs among the year’s most-performed to claim the BMI Urban Publisher of the Year crystal. Wiz Khalifa (“Nuthin’ But a ‘G’ Thang”), Lady Rage (“Deep Cover”), Too $hort (“Gin & Juice”), Warren G, Kurupt and Daz Dillinger (“Ain’t No Fun”), Game (“Murder was the Case”), Charlie Wilson (“Beautiful”), Akon (“Sexual Seduction”), Nas and Kurupt (“Next Episode”) and Dr. Dre all paid tribute to Snoop, before the guest of honor himself joined Bootsy Collins and Charlie Wilson for a finale of “What’s My Name?” before drifting off to share a bong hit with Del Bryant.
