Gil Friesen send-off

ONE LAST TOUCH OF CLASS: Gil Friesen was fondly remembered by his friends and family last night at UCLA’s Royce Hall in a program that mixed tears and laughter. Taking the stage to share memories of the record exec and entrepreneur who epitomized style and cool were his sons, Theo and Tyler (born 50 years apart), Jerry Moss, Peter Morton, Tom Freston, Jann Wenner, Trudy Styler (Sting's wife), Ed Ruscha, Mark Abraham and Gil's wife Janet. Offering songs were Carole King and Merry Clayton, Bryan Adams, Suzanne Vega, Sting and, climactically, Herb Alpert and Lani Hall. Herb's trumpet solo on “I Remember You” was incredibly poignant. Props to Gil’s great friend Jim Guerinot, who organized the celebration. (1/31a)
