Broadway Grosses, Tony Awards, Soundtracks

SHOW TUNES: Here's a look at the top-grossing shows on Broadway as the Tony nominations come down, with Kinky Boots snaring a field-high 13 nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book (Harvey Fierstein), Best Original Score (Cyndi Lauper) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Billy Porter, Stark Sands). Meantime, the box office smash Motown: The Musical was shut out in the top category, but did nab four nominations, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role (Valisia LeKae as Diana Ross) and Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role (Charl Brown as Smokey Robinson) as well as Best Sound Design and Best Orchestrations. Why should you care? Because, you uncouth philistine, this is a primary avenue of contemporary American culture. Oh, and there are records. Sony Masterworks will issue the Kinky Boots cast album on 5/28, while The Motown: The Musical soundtrack comes out on Bruce Resnikoff's UMe on 6/4. Oh, and the Tony Awards ceremony goes down on 6/9. (4/30a)
