Boston Strong and Dane Cook bash

KISS (OFF) THE COOK: As you'll have noted from the story we posted earlier today, the all-star Boston Strong benefit was a rousing success that not only raised money for those affected by the Boston Marathon bombings but brought an incredibly diverse selection of performers together in a spirit of generosity and good will. And America responded with an abundance of love for everyone involved ... except Dane Cook. The comic made the epically bad decision to withhold his set from the live stream of the event, and paid a heavy price on the social networks. "Hey everyone," Cook blithely tweeted afterward, "sorry my set was not a part of the live stream or televised! I didn't want any of the new material to hit the airwaves yet!" If he thought this explanation would get him off the hook, he was sadly mistaken. The ensuing explosion of vitriol was stunning even by the normally acerbic standards of the Internet. This tweet typified the reaction: "Ashamed that a greedy douche like @DaneCook is associated w/Boston & got to participate in a great event like the @OneFundBoston Concert." Yahoo News collected a few gems, such as "If this rumor is true about Dane Cook blocking the stream of his performance for a charity show, he should rot in hell asap" and "We will always forgive Doug Flutie for the gym shorts, but we will never forgive Dane Cook for being Dane Cook" (you can find more here and here). Other online commentators opined that the 10 minutes of silence represented the best material of Cook's career. Ouch. Well, look at the bright side, guy: You're definitely a trending topic. (5/31p)
