NEED A DECONGESTANT?: Amid all the deafening Beyoncé noise, discontent about the Grammy nominations lingers like one of those winter chest colds that last for months. Everyone wants to know: Who was in the room that decided to pass over Justin Timberlake and Jay Z for Song, Record and Album of the Year? These meetings in smoke-filled rooms—where debates are held about who belongs in which category, and what should be put forward as the best of each musical genre—are becoming an insult to the artists they’re supposed to represent. Will music’s biggest night be able to convince music’s two biggest stars to open its big show after treating them so shabbily?
