Banks at the El Rey

TAKIN' IT TO THE BANKS: (From our resident #henchhipster) Harvest's L.A.-bred Banks filled the El Rey Theater last night for the fifth stop in her summer U.S. tour. The soulstress emitted enticing R&B/electro-pop waves of emotion. Standouts included "Brain," the warm and ambient "Change" and "Drowning" (#1 Hype Machine), "Warm Water" (powered by her sultry vibrato) and the effortlessly catchy "Fall Over." The crowd was grinding, grooving and roaring to her cover of Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody." She previewed her upcoming full-length Goddess (9/9/14), with the title track and "Stick," which closed the encore on a playful note. "At first, I was scared to let the beasts out of my head," Banks declared before launching into "Waiting Game," "but then I realized, fuck, I can do that shit!" I caught Capitol's Bastille singing nearly every word of the set, and actress Jennie Garth made an appearance to support the rising star. As for the biz, Capitol head Steve Barnett, Harvest's Jacqueline Saturn and Piero Giramonti, Capitol's Bill Carroll, Caroline's Dominic Pandiscia and Mike Harris, WME's Kirk Sommer, KROQ's Lisa Worden and Julie Pilat (Beats/Apple) were spotted in the crowd. Overheard comments included, "Fucking #wcw!! Am I right?" Yes, that's how people talk now. (5/30p)
