Big Star benefit

HANGIN’ OUT IN THE STREET: A cast of thousands (well, maybe not that many) surrounded surviving Big Star member Jody Stephens and his latter-day Big Star cohorts Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer on the Wilshire Ebell stage Saturday night in an epic three-hour tribute to the music quintessential cult band (see 9/26 item). “It's a pretty Homeric experience that Chris Stamey and Ken S. (who was tour mgr too) put together,” Jody tells us. “Playing along with The Bangles singing ‘September Gurls,’ Pat Sansone and Brett Harris singing ‘You and Your Sister,’ Skylar Gudasz singing ‘Thirteen,’ Jason Falkner singing ‘Don't Lie To Me’ completely rocked, and these were just a few of the highlights. Very glad Luther Russell joined me on a few songs… Chris Stamey is indefatigable!” Our own Karen Glauber (who’s “incredibly sweet and generous,” according to Jody) provided food and lodging for several of the guys, not for the first time. The show was co-hosted by Trunkworthy, an org created by Apple’s Gary Stewart and 1021 Creative’s David Gorman (Rhino’s art director back in the day) to celebrate “the overachieving yet underexposed.” (9/29a)
