SUGARLAND’S SWEET, KINGS REIGN

Elton/Leon, Rod Stewart, Glee, Shakira and Third Day Lead Newcomers Dominating Top 10

As the industry gears up for a Swift sighting next week, yet another country act, Mercury Nashville’s Sugarland enters the top of the chart with their new album, The Incredible Machine, which debuts after selling a total of 207k.

That’s enough to turn back RCA/RMG’s Kings of Leon, whose Come Around Sundown bows at #2 with 187k.

In all, there are seven newcomers to the Top 10, with Elton John & Leon Russell’s much-ballyhooed The Union album on Decca next up at #3, with 78k, followed by another U.K. rock veteran in J/RMG’s Rod Stewart, whose Fly Me to the Moon, the next chapter in his American Songbook series, debuting just behind it at #4 with 76k.

Last week’s chart-topper, Cash Money/Universal Motown’s Lil’ Wayne is the only holdover in the Top 5, followed by newcomers including Columbia’s Glee Cast Rocky Horror Glee Show (#6), Epic/Sony Music Latin’s Shakira (#7) and Provident/Reunion Christian rockers Third Day (#10).

Shady/Aftermath/Interscope’s Eminem (#8) and Capitol Nashville/EMI’s Darius Rucker (#9) round out the Top 10.

Bob Dylan’s Witmark Demos, Vol. 9 of his ongoing Bootleg Series, debuts just outside the Top 10 at #11, with Walt Disney’s Hannah Montana Forever soundtrack nipping at his wandering boot heels at #12.

The other chart newcomers include the two new Beatles reissues on Capitol/EMI, Blue: 1967-1970 (#26) and Red: 1962-1966 (#28).

The week’s top double-digit gainer is Nonesuch’s Black Keys album, Brothers, which takes off #46-37, +91%, thanks to an iTunes sale, while Glassnote’s surging Mumford & Sons enters Grammy voting season with more impressive gains for its album, Sigh No More, which moves #23-30, +15% after the new single, “The Cave,” goes to radio. The album is now up over 350k, and a major contender for awards season.

Next week, it’s all about Taylor Swift’s Speak Now, but Warner Bros. will also put out a deluxe edition of Michael Buble's album.
