VAMPIRES VS. INDIANS AT MTV MOVIE AWARDS

Twilight and Slumdog Millionaire will battle it out for top honors as the most honored films at this year’s MTV Movie Awards, slated for May 31 at Gibson Amphitheatre in L.A., with Andy Samberg hosting.

The vampire blockbuster and the Oscar-winning Indian romance have six nominations each, including Best Movie.

Slumdog star Dev Patel and Twilight’s newcomer Robert Pattinson are both nominated for the Male Breakthrough Performance award, with Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian), Bobb'e J. Thompson (Role Models) and Twilight co-star Taylor Lautner.

Survivor’s Mark Burnett will once again produce the freewheeling ceremony.

Other nominated films include Iron Man, The Dark Knight and High School Musical 3: Senior Year.

Oscar winner Kate Winslet, who took home Academy Award for her dramatic role in The Reader, is up for Best Female Performance, along with fellow nominees Angelina Jolie (Wanted) and Anne Hathaway (this time for Bride Wars), Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Best Supporting Actress nominee Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).

Nominees for Best Male Performance are Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Shia LaBeouf (Eagle Eye), Vin Diesel (Fast & Furious) and High School Musical heartthrob Zac Efron. Needless to say, Oscar voters passed on all five of them.

Efron's co-star, gal pal Vanessa Hudgens will challenge Miley Cyrus for the breakthrough performance female award, along with Slumdog beauty Freida Pinto and fellow HSM star Ashley Tisdale.

Nominees for the Golden Popcorn trophy for Best Kiss include Efron and Hudgens, Pinto and Patel, Stewart and Pattinson, and Milk’s Sean Penn and James Franco.

The late Heath Ledger, who won a posthumous Oscar for his menacing performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, is also nominated in the Best Villain category.

This year, for the first time, MTV will honor the "Best Song from a Movie," with the nominees Cyrus' "The Climb" (from the new Hannah Montana film); Paramore’s "Decode" (Twilight), Slumdog’s Oscar-winning “Jai Ho” and Bruce Springsteen’s “The Wrestler,” from the movie of the same name.

Producer Burnett promises “three major events” to occur at the show this year, including “the biggest thing I can think of.”
