WHEELS 2.0 GETS A TUNE-UP FOR THE SUMMERTIME

The Temperature's Rising, and So Are the Decibels at Wheels HQ

This week Wheels comes at you with an L.A. singer/songwriter, a hefty On Deck section, including a young rapper on the rise, and a whole buncha big updates. We’re still keeping our palettes fresh with music you’ve recommended, so keep it coming to [email protected]. And if you’re a band looking for more, check out MySpace Records’ new program for unsigned bands (www.myspace.com/toyotamusic) and get yourself signed up.

ONE TO WATCH
Mandi Perkins
(www.myspace.com/mandiperkins): This Toronto-born singer/songwriter has been described as the “girl next door, only louder!” She’s finishing up her residency at Molly Malone’s before embarking on a national tour this summer that will take her from Seattle to Canada. She grew up listening to classic rock, studied English lit at UC Berkeley and eventually moved to Los Angeles to study law, simultaneously putting a band together and releasing her debut EP. Her fan base grew from there, and she’s been featured on MSN Music and Yahoo Who’s Next, while getting songs on several TV shows. Mandi is another casualty of the music biz, as she was recently released from her deal with Sony Music, but that hasn’t stopped her. She’s at the top of the talent list and definitely worth checking out live. It won’t be long before someone swoops up this dynamic star in the making…again.

ON DECK
Rob Roy
(www.myspace.com/robroy): Rapper whose viral video for his single “Fur in My Cap” has created quite a buzz in the industry and has labels chomping at the bit. Keep your eye on this one—big things are about to happen!

Man on Earth (www.myspace.com/manonearth): Pop-rockers from N.Y. in the vein of All American Rejects making some serious moves. Clear Channel Premium Choice tested their song “Something Better” last week, and stations across the country are already spinning it. This Friday, they film Fearless Music for Fox TV and are headed to CT to play with Halestorm & Burn Halo.

Spleen United (www.myspace.com/spleenutd): Electro-rock outfit from Denmark is here in the U.S. for shows this weekend. Our good friend and talented producer Michael Patterson will be putting their album out in October. Get out to one of their shows: they’re at the Bootleg Theatre Friday at 11, and at the Prospector in Long Beach Saturday at 10 on a bill with Amusement Parks on Fire.

BAND/ARTIST UPDATES
Sugar Red Drive
(www.myspace.com/sugarreddrive): It sure has been a busy week for this band, who we’ve been following for a couple months now. They’ve had promo tour visits to WDHA, WZMR, WKRL and WOTT, while the single "One More Time" is arriving at radio, and has already been added at Sirius Octane (18 spins in the last seven days). A full U.S. tour kicks off June 24, with radio shows in Jackson, MS (WRXW, 7/10, with Royal Bliss and Powerman 5000) and Albany (WZMR, 8/1, with Mudvayne, Static X and Black Label Society).

BABBLE
N.Y.-
based indie/pop artist Secret Secret Dino Club (www.myspace.com/secretsecretdinoclub) have signed to Drive Thru Records. Chalk up another score for Ben McLane.
