HITS Daily Double
IVANA: trying to figure out my favorites for the year--i know arctic monkeys, lily allen, pete yorn, tv on the radio, lindsey buckingham, jim noir, cold war kids, destroyer, the kooks, phoenix, band of horses and sparta are among them
LENNY: i think 30 seconds to mars is about to get really big, with the 3rd single as the breakthru as it was with my chem's first album
IVANA: i saw 30stm on saturday--they're HUGE. jared is a rock star--always has been--at least now he's proven so to the masses with absolute credibility. no band has worked harder this year

THE IVANA & LENNY SHOW GETS PICKED UP FOR THE FULL SEASON

This All-New Episode Is a Ladies’ Choice
IVANA: only two more weeks of this brilliance--are we there yet?
LENNY: nearly
IVANA: any observations about the year that is nearly over?
LENNY: i think rock radio formats have made a big mistake in alienating females
IVANA: i guess the expectation is that females will listen to hot a/c, which negates the possibility that the #1 consumer demo likes rock music!
LENNY: which is total and absolute horseshit
IVANA: the new entercom modern rock in cincinnati, from the ashes of waqz, is targeting both men and women. it's called "the sound," and beasing is one of its architects
LENNY: excellent, long live dave beasing. women have to be put back in the mix for the formats to blossom again
IVANA: ROCK FOR GIRLS! i fear that modern rock is going the way of hot ac. playing songs after the market has discovered the artist
LENNY: hot ac is aftermarket boring for adults. 15+ girls love rock, love rock boys. and are active consumers. mucho activo
IVANA: but modern rock is passive these days, with the exception of a handful of key stations that aggressively seek new music, many of whom work with dave beasing and jacobs media, in fact.
LENNY: this too must change. what they are doing now is not garnering ratings. they have to get females back in the mix
IVANA: i think the fear with programming to both is that the format will go back to the counting crows/gin blossoms era (which i loved).
LENNY: how about a happy median
IVANA: but this doesn’t work for modern rock stations in a competitive situation with an active in the market, especially in the middle of the country
LENNY: but i don't believe what they are currently doing is working either, how about losing some of the hard rock core to the rock stations and adding active females?
IVANA: shit, i heard that wrax birmingham may go sports talk
LENNY: fuck. like i said, these guys are just killing themselves
IVANA: i think the trick would be to find a sales staff that could sell it, not that most station's ratings are giving them much to sell
LENNY: i cannot believe that selling active young adults would be hard, they are the biggest consumers of all
IVANA: it's like nbc's reason for sticking with studio 60--what ratings they do have are from the wealthiest demo, which makes it attractive to advertisers
LENNY: exactly.... my point is that what they are currently doing is trapping them in a low ratings quagmire that is turning off an entire generation of girls, it is time to reevaluate
IVANA: like the shins record--it will definitely appeal to both men and women, and the band has a track record at retail. fortunately, sub pop is doing a great job of getting airplay on "phantom limb"
LENNY: good, maybe this band can kick open the door. it's a shame that alternative has ignored cartel, which appears to be a big hit
IVANA: which will be kicked open further with new arcade fire music in janaury. and tara interland is excited about a new scottish band called the cinematics, which just arrived at radio—i always trust her taste.
LENNY: and that plain white t's hit the clear channel rockers wall in the 20s, because it is also a hit. i hope they let fall out boy in again
IVANA: the format is fragmented so that neither the fray nor the really active-leaving bands like bullet for my valentine can get to the top of the chart. btw, mark fischer and christine chiappetta are having a huge day with fallout boy. it's the only song most people are adding today
LENNY: excellent. speaking of island, i also love the saliva song, which is surprising for me
IVANA: i always thought they write hit songs
LENNY: this one sounds like a monster smash to me. what else are you liking as the year nears its end?
IVANA: trying to figure out my favorites for the year--i know arctic monkeys, lily allen, pete yorn, tv on the radio, lindsey buckingham, jim noir, cold war kids, destroyer, the kooks, phoenix, band of horses and sparta are among them
LENNY: i think 30 seconds to mars is about to get really big, with the 3rd single as the breakthru as it was with my chem's first album
IVANA: i saw 30stm on saturday--they're HUGE. jared is a rock star--always has been--at least now he's proven so to the masses with absolute credibility. no band has worked harder this year
LENNY: and mucho credit to hilary shaev's team for delivering this thru very tough times
IVANA: AND they also broke red jumpsuit apparatus this year. bill carroll and howard p are this year’s mvps for sure.
LENNY: absolutely, a major smash band that just keeps getting bigger
IVANA: there’s a new gilmore girls on tonight, so I want to get out of here in time. say goodnight, gracie
LENNY: goodnight, gracie
