Discover and Download originally premiered on MTV2 in February 2005 as a weekly half-hour video program that gave viewers the opportunity to check out the hottest new artists and download their music for free after every show. Artists who were previously featured on Discover and Download include Avenged Sevenfold, Daddy Yankee, Arcade Fire and Matisyahu.

The video version of Discover and Download was developed from the performance-based version of the show, Discover and Download Live, which debuted in July 2004 and featured performances by My Chemical Romance, Saul Williams, Akon, Secret Machines and Ambulance LTD. After each show, viewers were given the opportunity to download MP3s of the exclusive live performance featured on the show.
