“Every year we have to out do ourselves and this year is no exception—the VMAs will be experienced in more places and on more platforms than ever before in our history. Between Diddy, who is the ultimate showman & entertainer, and the diverse roster of performers already locked in, this show is already shaping up to be an unforgettable end of summer bash.”

GREEN DAY, GWEN, MISSY AND U2 LEAD FIELD OF NOMINEES FOR THE VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS

P.Diddy to Host Show, Airing From Miami 8/28
Green Day leads the field of nominees in the 2005 Video Music Awards with eight, MTV revealed Monday morning. Tied for second are Gwen Stefani and Missy Elliott, with six apiece, while U2 notches five.

MTV also revealed that this year’s host will be P.Diddy, while Kanye West, Kelly Clarkson and Green Day have been confirmed as performers. As usual, more performers and presenters will be announced during the next four weeks. The 22nd edition of the VMAs will be the first to feature original music composed expressly for the show, as Lil Jon and Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda put their heads together. Of course, whenever new music appears, ringtones are soon to follow: Viewers will get a chance to download the original music as ringtones exclusively on *MTV on their Virgin Mobile phones.

Said MTV President Christina Norman, “Every year we have to out do ourselves and this year is no exception—the VMAs will be experienced in more places and on more platforms than ever before in our history. Between Diddy, who is the ultimate showman & entertainer, and the diverse roster of performers already locked in, this show is already shaping up to be an unforgettable end of summer bash.”

This year’s theme is water, with effects created by the same production company that erected the fountain in front of the Bellagio Hotel in Vegas.

The VMAs will be broadcast live (on the East Coast, at least) from Miami on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 8:00 p.m.
