BUFFETT PREPARES TO CHILL AT #1

Veteran Performer Will Bow on Top With New Album for RCA Nashville

Jimmy Buffett is making himself at home in Nashville.

The veteran performer’s new release, License to Chill, carries his own Mailboat imprint but, with all promotion and marketing being handled by Joe Galante and Butch Waugh’s red-hot RCA Nashville/RLG label, the album is poised to debut at #1 this week and looking to break the 200k sales barrier.

If it does, the release will be the third in less than a year to debut at the top of the charts for the Nashville label. It follows Kenny Chesney’s When the Sun Goes Down last February, which hit #1 with more than 570k in sales, and Alan Jackson’s Greatest Hits Volume II, which tallied 325k and a #1 bow last August. The latter was bolstered by "It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere," a hit country single Jackson recorded as a duet with Buffett which helped boost the album.

The Buffett album, which features a who’s-who of some of country’s biggest stars, including labelmates Chesney, Jackson and Martina McBride as well as Toby Keith, George Strait, Clint Black and Nanci Griffith, follows his last indie release on his own Mailboat label, distribbed by Koch.

The tracks include the first single, a version of Hank Williams’ "Hey Good Lookin’," featuring Black, Chesney, Jackson, Keith and Strait. Other songs on the disc include "Boats to Build" with Jackson, the title cut featuring a duet with Chesney; "Piece of Work," with Keith; "Sea of Heartbreak," with Strait; "Trip Around the Sun," with McBride; "Conky Tonkin’," with Black; "Playin’ the Loser Again," with Bill Withers, and "Someone I Used to Love," with Griffith.

It’s yet another savvy marketing move for veteran Music City execs Galante and Waugh, who have done what many thought impossible by expanding Buffett’s fan base.

Give the two a margarita and some cheeseburgers. They deserve it.
