You’d have to have been in some sort of accident that caused you to forget things to not know that a romantic comedy starring
Adam Sandler and
Drew Barrymore, opening on Valentine’s Day weekend would open huge and take the box office crown. So,
50 First Dates, starring a brain-damaged Barrymore, who has an accident that causes her to forget the previous day and the ever-wacky Sandler, took in $41 million over the weekend. That makes it the second-highest February opening ever, behind
Hannibal’s $58 million.
Sandler and Barrymore also fell in love in The Wedding Singer, which opened Valentine’s weekend 1998.
