CLEAR CHANNEL’S NEW MUSIC NETWORK PUMPS UP THE VOLUME

More Than 2,500 Unsigned Acts Have Registered With the Site So Far
Radio monolith Clear Channel Worldwide wants to show it’s not just about the superstars.

The San Antonio media conglom has set up the Clear Channel NEW Music Network, a free online service that makes it possible for rock wannabes to reach the public and the industry with their music.

More than 2,500 artists have registered so far. The site is being promoted by more than 500 Clear Channel radio stations and can be reached through their individual websites.

Sr. VP Programming Tom Owens says the Network was initially rolled out in seven markets and, within 30 days, hundreds of bands had posted their materials on the website. “Over the past few weeks, we have expanded the promotion to over 500 stations, and the response has been exciting. We believe there is a tremendous depth of talent, and we’re excited that this site will expose the music industry to a variety of new artists. In fact, we just discovered a new rapper named 50 Cent when we downloaded this incredible song called ‘In Da Club.’ Ever heard of it?”

WSIX Nashville PD Mike Moore says the Network has been a terrific resource for him. “We have an abundance of musical talent here. I am proud that we as a company have provided an outlet for these people that deserve to be heard. And now I don’t even have to take any of their phone calls, either.”

Clear Channel San Diego Programming Manager Jim Richards said: “We get requests all the time from artists wanting to get their material heard. Now, our stations are the direct link for southern California bands and artists to expose their talents on a worldwide stage…without ever having to leave San Diego.”

Capitol Sr. VP Promotion Dan Hubbert said it was great to see the company use its considerable audience reach to provide a valuable service to labels and an opportunity to undiscovered artists. “We feel the new music network has the potential to be a vital link between unsigned talent and our customers. Hey, who needs A&R executives anyway? All they ever do is go to conventions and come in late every day.”

The site offers registration in various musical genres.

Said Clear Channel President/COO Mark Mays: “We are very proud of the excitement around the New Music Network because we’re advocates for musicians and their music, and because our Radio and Entertainment businesses are looking for new artists and new music all the time. Our mission and charter is simple: exposure and growth for new music. We think this program will open up extraordinary opportunities for musicians everywhere. Now will you all get off my back?”
