"I feel honored and blessed to be able to express my humanness, yearnings and revelations through my art."
——Alanis Morissette, on being named Rock the Vote Patrick Lippert Award winner

Organization to Honor Peter Gabriel, Alanis Morissette with Patrick Lippert Award, Chuck D with Founders Award
If it’s January or February, there’s an award being given out somewhere.

Today, it's Rock the Vote's turn, naming Peter Gabriel and Alanis Morissette as this year’s 10th annual Patrick Lippert Award winners for their bash at New York’s Roseland Ballroom February 22, the night before the Grammys. In addition, Public Enemy’s Chuck D will receive the 2003 Rock the Vote Founders Award.

Founded in 1990 by members of the recording industry, the non-partisan, non-profit organization is dedicated to protecting freedom of expression, calling on young people to recognize their role in creating political and social change by exercising their right to vote and participate in government.

Gabriel is being honored for his work with the Witness project to arm activists with video cameras and communication technology to document abuses to end human rights atrocities. He also helped organize the "Human Rights Now" tour with Amnesty International, participated in the Nelson Mandela concerts and visited the USSR to assist the launch of Greenpeace.

Morissette is cited for her dedication to causes making the world safer for young people, including the benefit concert Groundwork, for The Act to Reduce Hunger, as well as several fund-raisers for gun control and 9/11 relief.

"I feel honored and blessed to be able to express my humanness, yearnings and revelations through my art," said Morissette, apparently without any irony. "For that to be something that may touch and inspire others, that invites them to define themselves in accordance to me, and that may remind them in some small way of their beauty and the gift that is life is the greatest gift I could possibly imagine. No, I have no idea what that means either, but it sure sounds purdy, don't it?"

Chuck D is being feted for his contributions to community service organizations and his work with Rock the Vote, the National Urban League and the National Alliance of African American Athletes.
