"Moulin Rouge" Tops National Board, Keys Leads NAACP Noms

Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge topped the National Board of Review's list of the year's best movies, while Alicia Keys led all nominees in the music category for the 33rd Annual NAACP Image Awards. Michael Jackson was second to Keys with four nominations.

The Board of Review gave co-star Jim Broadbent the nod as Best Supporting Actor for his role in Moulin Rouge and Iris, in which he played the lover of novelist Iris Murdoch. Billy Bob Thornton earned Best Actor honors for his roles in the Coens' The Man Who Wasn't There, the death-row drama Monster's Ball and the robbery comedy Bandits. Monster's Ball co-star Halle Berry was named Best Actress, while Cate Blanchett received Best Supporting Actress honors for her roles in Lord of the Rings, The Shipping News and The Man Who Cried.

The Board's Top 10 films are, after Moulin Rouge, In The Bedroom, the thriller whose Todd Field was named Best Director, Ocean's 11, Memento, Monster's Ball, Black Hawk Down, The Man Who Wasn't There, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, The Pledge and Mulholland Drive.

Other Board winners included Amores Perros for Best Foreign Film, Shrek for Animated Feature, Mulholland Drive's Naomi Watts and Life as a House's Hayden Christensen for Breakthrough Performances and Hedwig & the Angry Inch's John Cameron Mitchell for Directorial debut. Jon Voight and John Williams will receive career achievement awards, while Steven Spielberg will be presented with the Billy Wilder Award for Excellence in Direction.

Meanwhile, Keys is up for the NAACP's Outstanding Female Artist award along with Aaliyah, India.Arie, Janet Jackson and Jill Scott, while Michael Jackson vies for Outstanding Male Artist with Babyface, Brian McKnight, Luther Vandross and Maxwell. Keys is also contending for Outstanding New Artist with Bilal, City High, India.Aire and Nelly Furtado.

The NAACP Awards show will tape February 23 at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles, with a national airing March 1 on Fox Television.
