STONES RIP THIS JOINT

Rolling Stones Close First Leg of 2002-2003 Tour in Sin City (12/2a)

The Rolling Stones closed out the first leg of their heralded 2002-2003 tour with two rip-roaring concerts in Las Vegas.

Friday night’s show at the Joint, the club in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, was even more intimate than the band’s much-publicized Wiltern event last month.

About 1,200 celebs and high-rollers paid between $500-$1,500 a ticket for access to the club, and attendees were certainly not disappointed as the Stones served up a set of classics culled from their post-1968 repertoire.

Opening with "Jumping Jack Flash," the band savagely launched into a set that largely focused on their Let it Bleed album. Bleed’s "Live With Me" led into "It's Only Rock n Roll" and "Don't Stop" before the band hit the first surprise of the evening.

Sitting behind the keyboards, Mick Jagger began a wonderful rendition of the rarely played "Worried About You" from 1981’s Tattoo You LP. The band followed it up with "Beast Of Burden" from Some Girls, Exile’s "All Down The Line" and "Monkey Man" from Let it Bleed.

Next up was "I Can't Turn You Loose," "Gimme Shelter, "Tumbling Dice," Keith Richards’ "Slipping Away" and "Thru And Thru," "You Got Me Rocking," "When The Whip Comes Down," "Midnight Rambler," "Country Honk," "Start Me Up," "Satisfaction" and "Brown Sugar."

Saturday’s tour ender at the MGM Grand Arena, a venue as large as the Staples Center, proved an even more intense affair as they focused on their classic Sticky Fingers.

The band’s opened with "Street Fighting Man," and went into "Start Me Up," "If You Can't Rock Me," "Don't Stop" and "You Got Me Rocking."

The group then hit the Sticky Fingers mini-set, performing such tunes as "Wild Horses," "Dead Flowers" and "Bitch."

Then came "Neighbours," "Tumbling Dice," Keith’s "Slipping Away" and "Happy" (one of the highlights for sure), "Sympathy For The Devil," "Rocks Off," "Honky Tonk Women," "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" and "Satisfaction."

On the B-stage, the Stones rolled through "Mannish Boy," "It's Only Rock'n Roll" and "Brown Sugar," before returning for a "Jumping Jack Flash" encore.

After about a month break, the Stones will return to the U.S. for a series of shows including additional outings in Vegas and Los Angeles before heading overseas. The band will be echoing what they have done on their North American tour—staging one stadium, one arena and one small show in some cities including London, where they will play Twickenham on Aug. 23, the Astoria on Aug. 27 and Wembley Arena on Aug. 29.
