ONE-DAY SALES: ALANIS TO WIN “SWEEP” STAKES

Early Indicators Point to #1 Bow for New Album
Looks like Under Rug Swept will be anything but.

According to early reports from national accounts, Alanis Morissette’s new album (Maverick) will debut at #1 on the HITS Top 50 Albums chart next week on sales of over 150k. That’s plenty to unsaddle this week’s top cowpoke, Alan Jackson, whose Drive (Arista Nashville) logged another #1 week on sales just south of 118k.

Of course, it’s early yet, but if Alanis maintains her current pace, her tally for the week could go as high as 175-190k. But don’t quote us on that, because we’d hate to look any stupider than we already do, say, if the Alanis album were to sell more than that. This forecasting stuff’s tricky business, you know.

Other titles hitting the chart next week include the U.S. release of Kylie Minogue’s Fever (Capitol), which should come in at #2 on sales of more than 100k, and the X-Ecutioners (Loud) and Cher (Warner Bros.), each of which should move around 70k, good for Top 10 debuts.

Of course, with the Grammys this week, everything could change, depending on whether the awards and performances stir masses of consumers to visit their local record shops or extreme-superstore retailers to purchase music.

This forecasting stuff’s tricky business, you know.
