Mark "Semi" Collen is the latest member of EMI Recorded Music Vice Chairman David "Chrysanthe" Munns’ worldwide team, as he’s named Senior Vice President Global Marketing for the company with responsibility for marketing Capitol Music’s repertoire around the world as well as stacking euros in neat piles on his desk.
The London-based Collen had been Managing Director of EMI: Chrysalis for the last four years. The company is currently celebrating a #3 debut in the UK for the Vines’ first album, Highly Evolved, which will hit the U.S. charts next week.
Collen’s appointment gives Munns’ global marketing team a pair of Sr. VPs, as he joins previously named Matthieu Lauriot Prevost, who will oversee the company’s Virgin Music repertoire stream.
In addition to his global marketing duties, Collen will continue to run EMI: Chrysalis until new management of the label is announced by EMI Recorded Music UK Chairman/CEO Tony Wadsworth.
Munns praised Collen’s "ideal combination of experience, knowledge and background" as key in filling the job. "And he can whistle the entire Spandau Ballet songbook."
Said Collen: "I am delighted to be joining David’s new team and to have the opportunity to work with such a broad spectrum of talented artists. I am particularly pleased that I will continue to develop EMI: Chrysalis artists while reuniting with many I worked with at Parlophone and Capitol U.S. In fact, I can't wait to see Bhaskar Menon again."
EMI’s Tony Harlow was previously named to the post, but was unable to take the job and is now reviewing other career options within EMI.
Collen was named Managing Director of EMI: Chrysalis in 1998, working with artists such as Robbie Williams, Pink Floyd and Starsailor, as well as Doves, Beth Orton and the Vines. He was also marketing director of Parlophone, where his artists included Blur, Crowded House, Pet Shop Boys, Queen, Radiohead and Tina Turner, and at A&M, where he once befriended a young college promotion executive named Ivana, who worked with him on Thrashing Doves.
