WEEK IN PREVIEW: UH, GRAMMY-MANIA, PERHAPS?

Big Week at Retail as Alanis, Kylie, Cher,
X-Ecutioners Street
Because you couldn’t plan your week without this handy feature, we thought it best to let you know first thing that the Grammy Awards will be Wednesday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and teledcast on CBS. There are also the attendant parties, benefit concerts and festivals of debauchery—all of which should keep you so busy this week that you won’t even notice that the Olympics are over.

For those of you still working, it might interest you to know that it looks like a horse race for the top slot of the album chart. Could be Arista Nashville’s Alan Jackson, Warner Bros.Linkin Park or Def Jam South’s Ludacris. Give a slight edge to Jackson due to continued action at the racks. To know what’s going on, keep on an eye on the HITS building album sales charts the way you watched women’s figure skating. The only certainties are that Gospo-Centric’s Kirk Franklin will have the highest debut of the week, thank God, and Motown/Universal’s India.Arie keeps gaining as the Grammys approach. By the way, they’re Wednesday night at Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcast on CBS.

Elsewhere in the retail world, this Tuesday is shaping up as the kind of street date that we haven’t seen yet this year, with new releases from Maverick/Reprise’s Alanis Morissette, Capitol’s Kylie Minogue, Warner Bros.’ Cher and Loud/Columbia’s X-Ecutioners, in addition to post-Grammy sales bumps for winners and performers at Wednesday night’s show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and telecast on CBS.

Speaking of happy folks, the Einsteins at radio tell us that Island’s Andrew W.K. will be partying hard and V2’s White Stripes will be most added at PoMo. The Jamz people say that Ashanti’s "Foolish" (Def Jam) is a "hot-ass song" and Busta Rhymes’ "Pass the Courvoisier" (J Records) is getting a lot of love. In the Crossover world, it looks like Ludacris (Def Jam South), Jagged Edge f/Nas (So So Def/Columbia) and P. Diddy f/Usher (Bad Boy/Arista) will be the top three most added. In Top 40, it’s all about MCA’s Res, with Modern and Hot AC giving it up for A&M/Interscope’s Sheryl Crow and cleaning up on A&M's Vanessa Carlton and Arista’s Pink.

Did we mention the Grammys are Wednesday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and telecast on CBS?
